Robert N. Smith MD

On the evening of April 20, Sonoma lost a good friend.  Dr Robert (Bob) Smith fulfilled his wish and departed from us at home, surrounded by his wife and his children. He was our father, friend, confidante, and mentor.  His humor was legendary, founded on a keen sense of observation and warmth.  He was an astute judge of character, and valued kindness above all else.  When asked, what does your family mean to you, he replied, "Everything!!!” 

Born in Wakefield, Kansas in 1929, Bob attended Kemper Military Academy, Kansas State University, and graduated from The University of Kansas School of Medicine. He specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology, deliberately choosing the "happy profession" of delivering babies and providing quality health care for women. He loved traveling the world on his bicycle, spending time in his beautiful garden, and meeting new people. His beloved wife of 56 years, Marilyn Smith, preceded him in death. But he never lost his zest for life, and at age 80, got a second chance at love. 

Known by all for his wisdom, and generous spirit, he served as an active board member of the Sonoma Botanical Garden, Board President of Planned Parenthood, the Mill Valley Film Festival, and The Mountain Play. He also supported many other charities and philanthropic organizations. 

Bob is survived by his wife of 11 years, Rori Habas Smith, his children Jody (Carlo) Grossman, Mike Smith, Kathryn (Jim) Lino, Kimberly (Daryl) Ranton and Casandra (Andy) Lilien, his sixteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many dear friends.. 

There will be a celebration of his life at the Sonoma Botanical Garden. 12841 Sonoma Hwy, Glen Ellen, CA 95442 Thursday, June 12th at 2PM.
