Richard Paul Merlo

Richard P. Merlo 1949–2026 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a bright light in our lives, Richard P. Merlo, aged 76. Richard left us peacefully on June 4, 2026, with his beloved wife, Diane, and his cherished son, Richie, by his side.

Born and raised in Sonoma, California, Rich was the son of John and Marie Merlo, founder of the historic El Dorado Hotel & Restaurant. Growing up on the Sonoma Plaza he had one of the coolest, most historic "front yards" imaginable. The playground on the Sonoma Plaza is legendary! Between the massive duck pond, the old brick town hall, and the open grass, the Plaza is such a special place for him to spend his childhood. Whether he was climbing the playground structures, grabbing a pastry or a piece of the famous French bread at the Sonoma French Bakery was a boundless joy for him.

Richard lived his life with a generous spirit, an infectious warmth, and an unwavering devotion to his family. To know him was to know a man of integrity, quick wit, and a profound kindness that left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He spent 76 years cultivating deep friendships, spreading joy, and prioritizing the people he loved above all else.

Rich lived a life defined by hard work, integrity, and a deep dedication to his community. He spent much of his life in Sonoma Valley, a place he loved dearly and helped shape with his own two hands.

Rich was the owner and president of North Counties Drywall, Inc., a company he proudly built and led for more than 40 years. Under his leadership, the business grew to employ hundreds of people throughout the region. He found immense joy in his work and especially cherished the opportunity to collaborate with his son, Richie.

In addition to his success in commercial construction, Rich was a licensed general contractor who built many homes throughout Sonoma Valley. His craftsmanship, diligence, and strong work ethic earned him the respect of colleagues and the gratitude of the many families whose homes he built. He took immense pride in knowing that his legacy would live on in the very structures of the valley.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rich’s greatest love was his family. He was known for his boundless energy, curiosity, sharp intellect, and unwavering work ethic. He did not just provide for his family—he deeply invested in them. His sharp intellect made him the ultimate sounding board for any problem, while his curiosity ensured that family dinners were always filled with lively debates and shared learning. Yet, for all his drive and hard work, his happiest moments were the simplest ones: the quiet, unstructured times spent laughing with the people who mattered most. Rich leaves behind a legacy of profound love, boundless inspiration, and a blueprint for a truly well-lived life.

An avid cyclist, he rode his bicycle every day without fail, finding both freedom and peace on the open road. Rich lived life at full throttle and with unmatched determination. On his final day, he tackled one last great challenge, riding his bicycle up a towering mountain peak—a testament to his enduring strength, adventurous spirit, and stamina “The roads are going to feel empty without him”.

Rich also had a passion for travel, adventure, and lifelong learning. He loved exploring unfamiliar places, experiencing diverse cultures, and sharing stories from his journeys. A devoted fan of Jeopardy! He delighted in his remarkable knowledge and was often convinced he could outscore the contestants from the comfort of his favorite chair.

Rich will be remembered for his kindness, humor, generosity, and deep devotion to those he loved. His presence enriched the lives of countless family members, friends, colleagues, and employees, and his legacy will live on through the many people he touched.

While our hearts are heavy with his absence, we find comfort knowing that his light will continue to shine brightly through the countless lives he touched, the wisdom he shared, and the enduring love he left behind in the hearts of Diane and Richie.

"Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear." He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Diane Merlo; his son, Richie Merlo; his brother, John Merlo; and a large extended family, many dear friends and faithful companions: his faithful princess OREO, grand-pets, Pretzel & Coconut. The family is grateful for the love and support they have received during this challenging time. In lieu of flowers donations maybe made in memory of Rich to Jack Loundon State Park or Sonoma Pets lifeline. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday August 8, 2026, from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm at The Cline Family Cellars: 24737 Arnold Drive Sonoma.
