Mildred "Millie" Popovich Obituary

Mildred "Millie" Popovich passed away on April 3, 2020. She was born on February 6, 1928 to Milos and Dorothy Vukmirovich in Detroit, Michigan (both immigrants from Serbia). As an adult, Millie worked as a secretary and was soon courted by Milan Popovich, who won her over with his insistent pleas and became her husband in 1953. The two raised three children, Sandra, Michael, and Peter in Detroit.

Upon Milan’s retirement from General Motors in 1984, Milan and Millie settled in San Francisco, where they quickly forged strong relationships with the St. John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Church community.

Millie's endlessly sunny disposition brought joy to those around her. No matter what challenges she was facing, you could ask her "How are you doing?" and her answer would invariably be, "I'm doing good, honey. Can't complain." Even after losing her beloved husband in 2012, Millie made the best of living on her own, finding friends everywhere she went.

Millie is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. As someone who fell in love with an immigrant and welcomed many immigrants to America through her church, Millie would have wanted, in lieu of flowers, donations to be made to St. John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, 900 Baker Street, San Francisco, CA 94115 (www.sjsoc.org), or the charity of your choice.
