On the evening of November 6, 2023, Margie passed away peacefully at her home in Sonoma at age 78 surrounded by her loving family after having been diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor in early October.
Margie was born in San Francisco on February 4, 1945. She was the first child of Mary C. and James McKenna. In 1947, the family moved to Sonoma.
Margie attended St. Francis Solano and Flowery Schools and was a Sonoma Valley High School graduate. After graduating, she went to work as a food service employee at Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato and worked there until the base closed. While working there, she was honored with a Sustained Superior Performance Award for her outstanding job performance. After Hamilton closed, she went to work for the Sonoma Developmental Center for over 33 years. She worked in food service, and later as a hospital worker and eventually took classes and became a certified nursing assistant, the position from which she retired in 2007.
Margie had many interests and hobbies. She loved animals, particularly dogs, and over the years she had many. She enjoyed playing bingo at St. Francis for many years and she and our mom, Mary, took many trips to Tahoe, Reno and Vegas. Keno was her favorite game and her luck was legendary. She had fun traveling to England, Ireland and Hawaii and taking cruises to the Caribbean and a Mississippi River cruise. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, sewing, TV and movies. She loved NASCAR racing and she attended many NASCAR races at Sonoma Raceway. In retirement, she enjoyed her hobbies and monthly luncheons and breakfasts with groups of close friends.
Margie is survived by a sister, Nancy McKenna Weiler, her beloved brother-in-law, Steve Weiler, her nephews James and Mark and Mark’s wife, Sarah, great nieces and nephews Victoria, Jackson, Owen and Finn, Dylan and Syerra, and her great, great niece, Athena and numerous cousins.
A memorial mass will be held on January 26, 2024 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, 601 Aqua Caliente Road W. Sonoma, CA. at 11:00 am with a luncheon afterwards in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to UCSF Brain Tumor Research, or to the The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University or a charity of your choice.
