Gardella, Laverne Emilia passed away at home in Sonoma, CA on December 27th, 2023, after battling cancer for some time. She was 86 years old. Laverne was born on December 13th, 1937 to Angelo and Helen (Simoncini) Novelli at St. Francis Memorial Hospital, San Francisco.
Laverne grew up in the Portola District of San Francisco. Later, she and her parents moved to Daly City where she attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help for grades six through eight. For high school, Laverne attended I.C.A in the Mission District and graduated in 1955. She then attended SF City College for a year before marrying the love of her life, Richard Gardella, whom she had met in high school. Richard and Laverne married on October 6th, 1956. Together they raised Marc and Charlene (Schatz) Gardella for a short while in Daly City before moving to Sonoma to be closer to family. Once in Sonoma, Laverne went to work for the SVUSD. She retired after 25 love-filled years. In retirement she enjoyed reading, cooking, doll-making, painting, knitting, visiting friends, caring for family, playing computer games, and most recently, watching and rooting for the Giants, 49ers, and Warriors on TV with her son, Marc. The town of Sonoma, her family and friends, plants, flowers, butterflies, children, Disney, and See’s Candies are just a few of the things she adored throughout her life.
Laverne was a very strong and patient woman who was always a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen. She was incredibly witty, respected everyone, and made sure to focus on the good in others and in life. She is survived by her children, Charlene (Schatz) and Marc Gardella, her six grandchildren; Angelina, Vikram, Vesper, Serena, Anjali, and Neena, and many more friends and family who will miss her greatly. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Gardella; her mother and father, Helen and Angelo Novelli, as well as other dear friends and family.
Laverne was proud of her Italian heritage and will be buried among family at the Italian Cemetery in Colma, Daly City, CA. Friends are invited for visitation at Duggan's Mission Chapel, Tuesday, January 16, 2023 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Sonoma on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Private interment, Italian Cemetery, Colma. Arrangements and services are open to all who knew and loved Laverne. Flowers and/or a donation to a charity of your choice are welcome.
