Ethel Martha (Hasson) O’Malley, age 91, of Sonoma, CA (formerly of South Boston and Duxbury, MA), passed away peacefully at home on September 25, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Ethel was born in Boston, MA in 1933 to Ruth (Clancy) and William Hasson. She was raised in South Boston, graduating from St. Augustine’s High School in 1950. She attended secretarial school and went to work for the Boston Gas Company, where she met her future husband, David O’Malley. Ethel and Dave married on December 31, 1955 at St. Augustine’s Church in Boston.
Ethel and Dave eventually moved to Duxbury in 1968, where they raised their children, David Jr., Lynne and Paul. They were avid beachgoers and thoroughly enjoyed the lifestyle that living in Duxbury provided. In 1992, Ethel and Dave left Duxbury and moved across the country to beautiful Sonoma, CA. This provided them the opportunity to be actively involved in their grandchildren’s lives. In addition to spending time with her growing family, Ethel worked part-time at the Sonoma French Bakery and then Basque Boulangerie, and developed close relationships with so many of her treasured co-workers. Despite her time in both Duxbury and Sonoma, Ethel was a Boston (Southie!) Gal through and through, and passed her love of the city on to her children and grandchildren.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her siblings- John, Marie, Eileen, Ruth, William Jr (Billy) and Margaret (Margie). She is survived by her youngest sister Virginia (Ginnie), her children David O’Malley (Napa), Lynne O’Malley Philson (Petaluma) and Paul O’Malley (Atlanta); 9 grandchildren and 5+ great grandchildren. In addition, Ethel leaves behind many, many friends, including those in the St. Francis Solano Community, where she regularly volunteered her time and energy. She will be missed by all who knew her for her infinite kindness, abundant generosity, and endearing sense of humor.
A Memorial Mass will be held for Ethel at St. Francis Solano Catholic Church in Sonoma on Wednesday, October 2nd at 11am. If you feel you want to make a contribution, in lieu of flowers, please consider the St. Francis Solano Building Fund in Ethel’s memory.
