Elinor "Val" Matthews Obituary

Elinor “Val” Matthews (Valente) passed away on January 14, 2024. She was born August 3, 1919 in San Jose, CA, to her Italian immigrant parents, Anna and Ernest Valente. She was one of 13 children growing up with 5 sisters and 7 brothers. Life was centered on faith, work, warmth and love. Educated in public schools in San Jose, Val went on to pursue a career in nursing under the leadership of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul. She graduated in September 1941, only to be summoned by Uncle Sam to serve as a US Army Lieutenant nurse for over 3 years in World War II. She served on Oahu, Saipan and Guam as a member of the 204th General Hospital. She met Lester Matthews, a native of Texas, while on Guam working in surgery. The two later married at St. Leo’s Church in San Jose on February 24, 1946. They were blessed with two beautiful children, Kerry and Jon Matthews and they moved to Sonoma Valley in the late 60’s where they lived out the rest of their lives. They were 2 of the founding members of St. Leo’s Catholic Church here in Sonoma. Val had a long career as an OR nurse serving a few years at the Sonoma Developmental Center before moving to Sonoma Valley Hospital where she eventually retired from. A member of The Third Order of St. Francis since 1961, she enjoyed and embraced the Franciscan way of charisma, peace, reconciliation, and moderation. A lifelong learner, Val pursued and obtained a BS in Management at Pacific Christian College. She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, attending daily mass at St. Leo’s and spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids.

She is predeceased by her husband, Lester H. Matthew and their daughter Kerry Amormino (Matthews), and survived by her son Jon (Gina) Matthews and her son-in-law, Phil Amormino, her 7 grandchildren, Amy (Amormino) Woods, Matthew Amormino, Kelly Amormino, Kathleen (Amormino) Herrera, Gianna Matthews, Jason Matthews and Genessa Haber  and her 14 great grandchildren, Grant, Jayton and Gibson Woods, Ashley and Kayla Amormino, Dominic, Daniel and Mason Pucci, Judah and Silas Herrera, Rylie and Henry Haber, and Alessia and Aria Matthews.“This is the end of my journey-but may we all rejoice together one day in the peace of Christ, our Lord.”

In lieu of flowers, prayer is preferred, as it is the gift that goes far beyond any other offering.

All are invited to services for Val at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Sonoma on February 17th at 11 am. Reception to follow at church.
