Dessie Jo Farmer Obituary

Dessie Jo Farmer, age 97, passed away peacefully in Sonoma, California on December 13, 2023 with her son and daughter-in-law by her side.  Dessie and her identical twin sister, Betty, were born on March 3, 1926 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Charley and Essie Bryant.  The family lived in Oklahoma until they packed up their jalopy, 6 children and headed to California in 1940 where they settled in Fresno, California.  Dessie was 16 when she met her future husband, Otto O. Farmer, at Cherry Auction in Fresno.  Dessie lived in Fresno until she and Otto moved to Merced in the early 70’s.  After Otto died, she moved to Sonoma in 1994 to be closer to her son and his family.  Her years in Fresno and Merced were spent tending to farm chores. She especially enjoyed growing and eating tomatoes.

Dessie loved making art and craft projects including quilts, crocheting afghans and Barbie clothes, a variety of Christmas decorations, and her last endeavor creating over 1000 handmade cards.   She sold her craft projects at the local Holiday Boutiques in Sonoma each year until age 90, when she “officially” retired.  The last 20 years of her life you could always find her working a jigsaw puzzle up until a month prior to her death.

Dessie is preceded in death by her husband, parents and her siblings, Betty (Bryant) Johnson, Don Bryant, Tom Bryant, and Eugenia (Bryant) McDonald. She is survived by her son Larry (Lorelei) Farmer, her granddaughter, Sarah Farmer, brother, William Bryant, and various nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at St. Francis Solano Cemetery, 550 Napa Street East, Sonoma, California on Friday, January 26 at 11:30 am.
