Carol Bernadine Hanna

Carol Bernadine Hanna, age 90, passed away peacefully and with grace on September 13, 2024 in Napa, California. Carol was born on a farm in Sheffield, Iowa on November 11, 1933 to Michael and Imogene McGrath. She was the youngest of 11 and took great pride in belonging to such large family. During WWII, the family moved to Seattle, Washington where Carol graduated from Lincoln High School. Next, she received a BA in education from Seattle University and worked as a teacher in San Lorenzo, California until she married her husband of 64 years, Richard Hanna. After living in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey, the couple built a home in the hills outside Sonoma, California in 1972 for their family of seven.

Carol was an avid reader and liked to play cards, especially "Spite and Malice". Taking long, frequent walks was her favorite way to exercise. She had an ear for music and performed with the Vintage Singers for many years. On sunny days, she enjoyed eating her lunch outside on her deck amongst the wild life and oak trees. Infused with a love of children, she fostered, mentored and tutored youngsters all of her adult life. Time spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren was extremely precious to her. Carol was a sweet, kind, and forgiving soul who volunteered her time with schools, at church and in the community. Her Catholic faith sustained her in good times and bad, and she tried to live the golden rule everyday.

Carol is preceded in death by her son, David Hanna; grandson, Stephen Sutton; her parents; and all her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband Richard Hanna; daughters Alice Sutton (Drew), Liane Hanna (Mike) and Margaret Hanna; son Brian Hanna (Karen); 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at St Leo's Catholic Church on September 27 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Friends in Sonoma Helping (FISH) or Vintage House would be appreciated.
