Phil McGee Obituary

Sonoma resident, Phil McGee, passed away in peaceful dignity on May 15, 2019 while surrounded by family.  He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and great friend who had a deep and lasting impact on countless lives.  He was a true gentleman.

He is survived by his loving wife Cheryl, his three sons, John (Melanie), Louis and Patrick (Sheryl), his granddaughter Natalie, his sister Anne (Cliff) Righetti , nieces Kelley (Joseph) Voss and Donna (Brent) Hayward, nephew Greg (Christina) Righetti and their respective children. Phil is preceded in death by so many cherished friends, both new and lifelong.

Phil was a 3rd generation San Franciscan, who graduated from his beloved St Ignatius High School in 1954 and then from the University of San Francisco in 1958, later serving in the US Army for two years.  Early on in his professional life he worked in the QFI supermarket chain.  He entered the San Francisco Police Academy (118th recruit class) in 1971 ahead of one of The City’s most tumultuous decades on record, walking a beat in and around the 5th and Market St area with his partner Don O’Connor. Phil retired from the SFPD in 2001.

Phil enjoyed family trips to Camp Mather, going on walks in the Marina with his three young boys, devouring many types of novels and joyfully laughing with old and new friends on winter vacations in Puerto Vallarta.  For a number of years Phil went to Chicago for a Cubs Baseball weekend with friends from across the country.
In 2003, Phil and Cheryl moved to Sonoma.  Phil became a volunteer for St Vincent de Paul giving a helping hand to the impoverished and hungry in Sonoma.  He was always a patient person who was rarely critical and who preferred positive reinforcement as a means to help others identify the best in themselves.

He will be missed by many.
