Passed away peacefully on the morning of September 13, 2017, at the age of 89, with her devoted son and caretaker, Brendan, by her side. She was born Irene Mikita on May 29, 1928, in Hollidays Cove, WV. The youngest child and only daughter of Michael and Julianna Mikita, both eastern European immigrants, she grew up among hard working, depression era folk. Upon her graduation from Follensbee High School in 1946, she moved with her parents to Sonoma, joining her brother Dr. Michael Mikita, who had established a medical practice there the year before. Always a very social person, she made countless friends and quickly settled into her new home. While working at Simmon's Pharmacy at the soda fountain she met her late, future husband. A local boy, Paul Martin had returned from the war in Europe and worked at his father's real estate office. The two were married in 1952 and together raised five sons: Shawn, Kevin (Laura), Brian (Heather), Brendan and Darren (Alicia). In addition to her homemaking duties, she was employed at El Verano School, Dailey Floors, Abbey Carpets and Yaeger & Kirk Hardware. Irene was a tireless volunteer for charities in Sonoma Valley. Meals on Wheels, Clothes Closet, Fish and others benefitted from her desire to help those in need. Even in her last years, after arriving at Golden Living Center, she could often be found at a bedside comforting another resident. She will be missed by all of her sons, their wives, her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. All of us would like to express our thanks to Brendan for his daily company and care of Irene during the last four years. We love you Mom. A memorial service will be held at St. Leo's Church, Sonoma, on October 7, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to hurricane or earthquake relief.
