Eileen Joyce Martinez passed away peacefully at her home on June 21, 2018 at the age of 87 after an extended illness. Known as Joyce, she was surrounded by loved ones throughout her life and last days.
Joyce was born in March of 1931 in Evart, Michigan where she grew up on a farm. After her high school graduation, she joined her parents in California where she later met her husband George Martinez. They settled in Sonoma in 1953 and raised four children here.
Joyce worked for Safeway as a checker for 21 years until retirement in 1985. She also filled her time with caring for grandchildren and later great-grandchildren. She was known for her needlework especially her crocheting. Often she donated her work to many different charities. Besides her family, her next great loves were gardening and animals. She truly had a green thumb and could grow anything. And when it came to animals in need, she was their best friend.
Joyce’s husband George pre-deceased her in 1995. Her daughter Vicki Kniffen died in 1999. Her surviving children are Gary Martinez of Magalia, CA, Ric Martinez of Sonoma, and Sue Martinez of Sonoma. Joyce also leaves six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren with one more on the way. And we must include her sixty plus year old tortoise, Mac.
