Sylvia was born in 1927 to Luis and Zaida Cossio in San Francisco
CA. She and her sister Grace attended local schools, Sylvia graduating
from Polytechnic High. After high school she worked as the number
please girl for Ma Bell, and a bank teller while attending classes at Cal.
In 1947 Sylvia married Joseph Nicholas Howarth and together they
enjoyed great neighborhood friendships, music, and auto racing.
Separately she enjoyed garage sales, and looking at old houses.
Joe and Sylvia raised four children and countless beloved dogs in
the city they loved until his death in 1977. Sylvia was a fierce San
Franciscan, with life long relationships born of her youth there.
In 1978 Sylvia obtained her Real Estate license and was employed by
Barbagelata Realty, then Anne Rosenburg Realty, finally putting her love of
houses to work. She continued to do this in Sonoma where she moved in
the early 1980’s.
Never one to sit still, Sylvia moved to Incline Village NV in her mid
70’s, enjoying her antiques, interior decorating, painting, and furniture
refinishing. She then enjoyed a few years in Reno, making new friends
along the way. In 2012 Sylvia returned to Sonoma to reside at Sonoma
Hills, and to be near her family.
Syliva’s son Joseph Anthony Howarth, and daughter Cara Sylvia
Howarth precede her in death. She is survived by her daughters Regan
Howarth Reid, and Erin Elizabeth Doyle. Her granddaughters Emily R.
Williams, Melissa A. Steenport, and Jamie N. Steenport, and her greatgrandchildren
Alex Acosta, Avery N. Steenport, Orion H. Steenport, and
Daxton G. Steenport.
At her request private family interment will be held at Holy Cross
Catholic Cemetery in Colma, CA.
