Beverly Jane (Sutherland) Loftus was born at the home of her parents, Erle and Maguerite (Kratzer) Sutherland on Sonoma Mountain Road in Santa Rosa in Sonoma County.
She graduated from Sonoma Valley High School in 1945 and the Santa Rosa Junior College in 1948. She served as an RN at Sonoma County Hospital 1949-1950 and in Seattle, WA, 1950-1951; then as a Psychiatric RN at the state hospital in Eldridge 1951-1953 and at Belmont Sanitarium in 1954. After being at Kaiser Hospital in the Bay Area, she worked for years at Sonoma Valley Hospital from 1955 to 1974, where she set up the ICU facilities and served as Head Nurse. After a 10-month hiatus spent on a farm in Minnesota, Beverly returned to Sonoma Valley Hospital for 15 years as Head Nurse of the ICU. Even after retiring from full-time duties in 1989, she still worked parttime until 1992.
Before beginning her nurse’s training, Bev had met and dated John Noel Loftus, but it was after two other marriages for Bev (Manley and Tripp) that they found each other again and married in 1986.
Bev’s hobbies included cooking and gardening, and she and John were charter members of the Sonoma Good Sam Club, enjoying many years of travel together in their motorhome up until John’s death in 1998.
Bev’s survivors include her daughters, Kathy Tsouvas and Chris Manley, and four grandsons and one granddaughter. She was predeceased by her sons, Terry (1967), Craig (1988), and Tom (2007).
A memorial service will follow at a later date, with burial at Bennett Valley Cemetery.
