"Russ" Hurley passed away with dignity on March 31, 2017. After 87 years of a full and meaningful life, Russ will be buried with full military honors befitting his 22 years in the United States Navy. Retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer, E-9, was his most honored achievement. He served honorably aboard the USS Wisconsin, USS New Jersey and USS Missouri, all battleships. His service time took him through both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Russ and his bride Florence were married for 65 years and lived in Sonoma for 56 years. After serving his country, he continued to serve his community. Russ was a member of the Fleet Reserve Branch 8 in Vallejo, VFW, American Legion, Sonoma Lions Club, Sonoma Moose, Sonoma SIRS and spent over 30 years officiating sports, most notably his 30 years with the North Bay Officials Association officiating high school football. Playing golf, for Russ, wasn't just a hobby or pastime, it was his passion. Originally from Maryland, he was a truly enthusiastic New York Yankees and Chicago Bears fan. He is survived by Florence, daughter Debra and sons Richard, Ronald and Randy, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, as well as his brother Buddy and sister Ilene Wolfe both living on the eastern seaboard. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday April 7th at Duggan's Mission Chapel, followed by military burial at the Veterans Cemetery, both in Sonoma.
