Dear Sally and Family:
Our sincerest condolences to you on the lost of Peter. Although we did not know Peter very well, we cherish the time working with Sally at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University.

Hello, my sincere condolences to the family. I was a student with Dr Peterson in the late 1980s. I learned all my genetics from him and I cannot thank him enough for that. Then Mr and Mrs Peterson came to my wedding years later, it was very touching. I will alwyas remember him as a enthusiastic person, with lots of freedom of thinking in the lab. Sincerely, Etienne Kaszas

As we celebrate Grandpa’s life, two of his pursuits rise to the fore. His love of exploration was manifest in his academic inquiries as in his travels near and far. Just as he thrilled in learning new things about how the world works and how it varies from place to place, he reveled in the joy of helping others appreciate these same wonders.

While I was growing up, Grandpa was always ready to engage: whether it was on an intellectual plane, as in reading a book to me, or on a more physical one, as in teaching me how to ride a bike, tend to plants in the garden, or chop wood, he always took to the task with gusto. I feel so fortunate to have been able to visit his family’s place of heritage, and recall well the happiness he so clearly felt in Greece, and especially on Lesvos. He took such pride in showing that culture to me, a pride I carry forward. (See photos via link in side panel.)

I will always be grateful for the excitement in appreciating the natural world that he shared with me. As I find joy in the journey, I will recall with fondness our explorations together.

We have many fond memories of Professor Peterson from our days at Ames, Iowa.

Professor Peter A Peterson had been a renowned student, researcher and contributor to plant genetics spanning over six decades; he had been a teacher, guide and mentor to several students; a caring husband and a doting father to his daughters.

He experienced, lived alongside, worked with, collaborated and contributed to the growth of plant genetics with all the doyens of the 20th century and beyond, save Mendel himself!

Prof Peterson shaped many a student; I remember him best for his relentless determination and doughty hard work; he instilled discipline and the spirit of tenacity in his students that were imbibed in us quite unconsciously … to be thorough, to persevere and to think beyond, were the indelible hallmarks he had imprinted in our minds. When it came to work, he spared none and led by example!

Professor Peterson is and will remain alive in the minds of every student of genetics for his phenomenal contributions that had not always been recognised or rewarded in his own time.

I am thankful to him for the opportunity he gave me in getting my higher education from his lab, the Siberian winters of Ames notwithstanding!

The delicious Thanksgiving dinners, chilled watermelons on the field and summer BBQs at the parks in Ames after the looooong pollination season were the occasional moments of relaxation.

Radha and I send our sincere condolences to Mrs Sally Peterson, Sara, Susan and all the members of the Peterson family.

May he rest in peace!

Om Shanthi, Shanthi, Shanthi!

Sincerely,

Radha and Gurumurti Natarajan

Our heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Peterson and her family. We have very fond memories of Dr. Peterson during our schooling at Iowa State University from 1978 to 1982. Dr. Peterson was a consummate professional with greatest work ethic, a true pioneer in scientific thought, and a motivating force for his students. That work ethic and motivation have helped us in our own science careers. We are deeply indebted to Dr. Peterson. Our memories of him live on.

Thank you for visiting the site in recognition of Peter Peterson. Our family is grateful that he and Sally were able to live close to us in Sonoma, California, for the last few years of his life near his two daughters and his two grandsons.

It is a joy for us to receive the reflections on working with him from his students and colleagues. His life’s work of collaboration in research and teaching meant the world to him. We rejoice in the expressions of appreciation for the value of his guidance, both in the lab & field, as well as toward personal development.

To celebrate his contributions, please share your recollections, anecdotes, discussions, or exchanges with him that comes to mind. He was devoted to his academic pursuits and to the nurturing of the next generation of geneticists.

Thank you, Susan Peterson St. Francis
