John Steven Roberts Fulfer, named for Father Roberts (longtime pastor of St. Francis Solano), was born on August 15, 1969, a Holy Day of Obligation that fell during the Woodstock weekend. He died November 1, 2017, in the place where he was born, Sonoma Valley Hospital, following a brief illness.
The Woodstock and the Holy Day of Obligation dichotomy seemed to create in John an amazing brew of untamed seriousness and austere kindness. He found peace and joy hiking in Jack London State Park, he loved going to rock concerts (he saw Rush countless times), and he loved animals unconditionally, especially cats and possums.
John is survived by his mother, Sheila Angela (Gillen) Fulfer, sisters Anne-Marie Fulfer (Sunil Ramalingam) and Mary Susan Fulfer, niece Emma Danielle Fulfer Ramalingam, nephew Benjamin Keil Fulfer Ramalingam, and his cat, Squeakers. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Louis Fulfer, and his grandmothers, Ann Fulfer and Winnifred Keil Gillen Fulmer.
The family would like to thank the medical staff of Sonoma Valley Hospital, Susan Duggan of Duggan’s Mission Chapel, and the employees of Safeway for their care and assistance during this difficult time.
There will be a service at St. Francis Solano Church, 469 3rd St. West, Sonoma, CA, on Friday, November 10, 2017, at 2 p.m.
