Doris Blackman Weir, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on March 25, 2018.
Born on November 9, 1926, in Washington, D.C., Doris's peripatetic childhood ranged from Maryland, New York City, Connecticut, Virginia, Alabama, and Tennessee. She graduated with a degree in Geology from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. Her career with the U.S. Geological Survey began in Colorado, where she met her future husband, fellow geologist Gordon Whitney Weir. Together, they brought up three children. Doris and Gordon's careers with the U.S. Geological Survey led them to California, Kentucky, and Arizona. They also spent a year in Indonesia.
Doris and Gordon retired in 1994 to Santa Rosa, where they enjoyed being close to their grandchildren. Doris was active in many volunteer organizations, including the Luther Burbank Home and Gardens, Catholic Charities of Santa Rosa, the Sonoma County Library Adult Literacy Program, and the Brook Hill Elementary School.
Doris inherited the sophistication of her New Yorker father and the Southern charm of her mother from Alabama. She enjoyed travelling, art, and reading. She was a talented gardener, seamstress, knitter, and a daring cook. Most of all she was a fun, intelligent, and kind person.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Gordon, in 2011. Doris is survived by her children, William, Robert, and Nancy; daughter-in-law Karen; and grandchildren Virginia and Benjamin.
Doris's ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony.
