Dale Allen Wheeler, born on December 2, 1932, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2017, at the age of 84, following a brief illness. Born in Fort Collins, Colorado, Dale was a resident of Sonoma for the past 70 years.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Violet; his children, Audrey, Lori (Steve), and Craig (Kristin); and his brother, Charles. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Gianetta, Dalton, Claire, Dominic, Mason, and Alessandra, as well as several other family members.
Dale graduated from Sonoma Valley High School and attended Cal Poly before enlisting in the Navy, where he served for four years. He was commissioned on the USS Manchester, where he worked as a carpenter.
When he left the Navy, he worked for several local construction firms, honing his carpentry skills prior to venturing out to start his own construction firm. Dale Wheeler Construction, along with partners Vic Conforti and Roland Thibault, leaves a lasting legacy with numerous commercial and residential developments throughout the Sonoma Valley. He also trained many of the next generation of local contractors.
Dale was involved with Little League and Babe Ruth as a coach and volunteer. He became an avid golfer in his early 40s. Later in life, Dale and Violet enjoyed traveling, watching tennis, gardening, and being with their grandchildren.
Private services will be held at a future time. Donations may be made to Hospice by the Bay, 190 West Napa Street; Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation, 347 Andrieux Street; and Sonoma Valley Little League. All organizations are in, Sonoma, CA 95476.
