Catherine Pellman Kirkwood passed away peacefully at home February 27, 2017, at the age of 94, with her family at her side. Catherine was born on the family farm in Barney Township, North Dakota on January 10, 1923. She was the third of nine children. Her parents, John and Rose Pellman, and siblings moved their farm to Mantador, North Dakota, when she was four. Catherine always wanted adventure so after secretarial school in Minnesota she joined the WAVES in 1944 and served until 1948. She was stationed in Washington, DC, where she met her husband, Frank E. Kirkwood, also serving in the Navy. They were married on May 21, 1949, and began their life together. They were stationed in many places including Wahiawa, Hawaii; Adak, Alaska; Great Lakes, Illinois; Kamiseya, Japan; and Taipei, Taiwan. After being stationed on Skaggs Island for a year, Frank retired.

They settled in Sonoma, California, in 1963 to raise their four children. Catherine worked at the Sonoma Developmental Center from 1969 until 2002 as a secretary for many departments. She lived independently at Brookdale Senior Living for twelve wonderful years. After her retirement she volunteered at Prestwood Elementary School, enjoyed daily walks, which kept her active, traveled a little, and enjoyed her eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Catherine was admired for her quiet determination and was an inspiration for all who knew her.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Kirkwood, sisters Pat Shelley and Florence Hundley, and brother Charles Pellman. She is survived by her daughters, Jacquie Phillips (Dan), JoAnn Merritt (Ed), Jeanette St. Onge (David); son Joe Kirkwood (Denise); sisters Joan Heitkamp, Dolores Davis and Inez Gripentrog; brothers Leo and Harry Pellman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

We wish to thank Hospice by the Bay, Sonoma Valley Fire and Rescue and Sonoma Valley Hospital Emergency Department for the loving care of our beloved mom. A private graveside service was held on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at St. Francis Solano Cemetery in Sonoma, where she was laid to rest beside her husband.
